Lowell Wolff, Photographer | Artist Statement on
Reflections of Northern Minnesota
Having graduated from Concordia College in the spring of 1971. I began working for Fargo Public Schools. Having heard about the north shore of Lake Superior, it became the destination of my first vacation. One trip was all it took to realize that it was indeed a special place. But, it wasn’t only the north shore area.
Over the years that followed there were repeated trips and I began to realize somewhere between Detroit Lakes and Park Rapids there was a change in the makeup of trees. It was then I realized the significance of the boreal biome.
Fast forward forty years and I found myself focusing on photography. When it came time to put together an exhibit of photographs, there was no doubt that it would be about northern Minnesota. The clear water and air combined with incredible scenes had made a special place in my heart and mind. Repeated trips to the north shore, iron range, Itasca and other Minnesota State Parks only served to deepen that sense of place.
So, whether your favorite image is a winter sunset over Lake Superior, one of the beautiful waterfalls or a whimsical serendipity of a lawn chair atop a gravel pit, I hope you feel the admiration I have for this area and the Reflections of Northern Minnesota.
